NATAL HOROSCOPE REPORT
by Michael Erlewine Astrology is as old as measured time. Although there are many different approaches to astrology, all astrologers appear united in the idea that there is a connection between the heavens and the Earth -- they share one common space. For centuries there has been a misunderstanding concerning the nature of astrology to the effect that the heavens somehow "influence" events here on Earth. This theory of celestial influence has penetrated into the modern world until today it is the main concept or idea of astrology supported by the public -- the lay astrological audience. Professional astrologers do not hold with theories of celestial influence. Instead, the modern astrologer conceives of the heavens and Earth as united, interpenetrating, and sharing a common space and time. The great cosmic or celestial events happening around and beyond the Earth (eclipses, lineups, and so on) are not seen as CAUSING events to occur on Earth, but as great signatures of events ALSO happening here on Earth. In other words, there is no "cause" in the heavens followed by an "effect" here on Earth. Instead, both planetary and earthly events happen simultaneously and are mutually reflective. Neither is the cause of the other; both are the product of the moment, one acted out in the heavens above, the other here on the Earth below. While astrologers don't feel that heavenly events are the cause of events here on Earth, they do feel that specific heavenly events are enacted here on the Earth too -- at the same moment. In other words, there is only one grand "play." The great drama enacted in the sky is also acted out (in exact detail) here on Earth in the same instant. Another way to say this is that the Earth is part of the cosmos and shares in that cosmic moment. Scientists have been discovering (for example) that sunspots, solar flares, and solar activity have a very definite (and almost immediate) effect here on Earth. Astrologers tend to feel that all major cosmic events such as eclipses are interactive; they represent an activity also taking place within us and our consciousness. In summary, astrology is a study of heavenly cycles and cosmic events as they are reflected in our earthly environment and vice- versa -- a vast cosmic clock. Astrologers find the cosmic patterns revealed in the rhythmic motions of the planets a great help in shedding light on the seeming helter-skelter of everyday life. Astrologers may have their heads in the heavens, but only to better guide their feet here on Earth. |

Major Planets | We are now ready to look at your astrology chart.
We will start out with the major planets outside the Earth's orbit: Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. These are the planets of the outer world -- life as we find it outside ourselves. Mars tells us something about the drive and energy we have, Jupiter shows us how to best channel that energy, and Saturn indicates what sort of landscape or territory we will be passing through. Again: Saturn represents the life conditions (and obstacles) we will be passing through, Jupiter the way or path through it, and Mars what kind of push or drive we can count on to keep going. As we move from planet to planet, I will present each planet in the same format. For each planet I will point out any very clear abilities you may have in that particular planetary area. Second, I will outline problems that you should be aware of, and last I will indicate any special talents you may have related to the planet. Let's start with the planet Saturn in your chart which gives an insight into some of the problems we face in life. |

Saturn | Astrology is a great tool for learning who we are and what we are good for. The process of finding out who we are (self-discovery) starts when we come to grips with whatever problems life presents to us and begin to get a handle on them. Astrologically, this has to do with the planet Saturn, the great time keeper. In other words, if we have not learned to deal with Saturn... if we don't have some control of time, literally: if we don't have any time, there is little opportunity to get to other questions in our life. Saturn rules the laws and the particular limitations of this material world we all live in. In our astrological charts, Saturn indicates where we are bound to learn, like it or not. Saturn is also said to be the great teacher, the planet that keeps us from getting too carried away in one direction or another. Although it always seeks to limit and determine any thought, word, or action, it also defines and clarifies. We will start with Saturn in your chart, and see how this planet affects you. |
[Saturn in PISCES] There could be problems with selfishness. You tend to ignore or avoid opportunities to help out and give of yourself. You fear the deeper, mystical side of life and need to practice putting others before yourself. Also learn to use intuition and feelings. Lend a helping hand. |
[Saturn in Opposition with Uranus] Your innate seriousness and sense of obligation tend to set themselves up against anything that is new and different. Independence on the part of people or events somehow challenges your authority and never fails to invoke an argument or stand-off. Change, even novelty, is seen as threatening and confrontational. Even so, the forces of change assert themselves now and again, managing to over-rule and overturn whatever you have managed to tie down. |
[Saturn in Opposition with Pluto] You are very touchy and tend to keep your vulnerability hidden from others. You work hard at avoiding personal confrontation and sensitive issues. In fact, you are very determined about this. Areas where you are insecure seldom have any opportunity to get aired out and toughen up. Your serious exterior covers over tender feelings. Duties and responsibilities could keep you from opportunities for change and inner growth. |

Jupiter | Now that we have looked at Saturn and some of the problems you face, we turn to a planet will show us how to deal with those problems: Jupiter. Jupiter has always been the key to Saturn and the planet of success. At the very least, it is the planet of simple survival, the way we keep going or get through life. Thus Jupiter has to do with the way in which we can be successful -- our vocation. It is interesting that the Hindu word for Jupiter is Guru. Jupiter is indeed the guru and guide, the way we go through life -- our life path or vocation. Jupiter is how we handle Saturn -- the laws of life, our limitations. It represents our particular light or path. Jupiter provides us with our sense of direction, the path we are on, the way we approach life's problems. It has always been an indicator of how successful we may be, and thus it is the planet of vocation. Now let's look at your particular Jupiter. |
[Jupiter in GEMINI] A career in communications of one kind or another is indicated, for you are a kind of living link or channel. You love investigations, reporting, writing, speaking, broadcasting, advertising -- any and all networking. Forever curious, you love searching for answers and following leads. |
[Jupiter in Opposition with Sun] You may end up making a living at something not entirely in your best interests. There is a tendency to get carried away when it comes to vocational choices, and you could find yourself pursuing possibilities that lead nowhere. This going against yourself, so to speak, may also bring you in opposition to those in authority. You may have to examine carefully any career choices you make. |
[Jupiter in Square with Moon] The path or career that you take may go against tradition and thus sometimes be a lonely one. Don't expect much support from those around you. There is also some danger you could overextend, making decisions that go against your own better feelings and instincts. Career choices could be at the expense of home and surroundings. Your approach to solving problems may get you in hot water with others, resulting in frequent debates, if not out-and-out arguments. |

Mars | Our vocational success depends a lot on how we feel about our life -- our particular drive for success. Mars is the planet of emotion and inner motivation or drive. When we search for the meaning of something (life or whatever), it is Mars that urges us on, keeps us searching. Mars also drives us against things too, and sends us into war and combat. The urgency of Mars, the search for meaning, is identical to the deep need for union in each of us. Therefore Mars is the planet of union or yoga and marriage. Marriage is the most common form of yoga or union. When we have questions about sex drive and the search for the opposite sex, we are looking at the planet Mars. Each of us has an inner drive and emotional push with a very specific qualities. Let's take a look at Mars in your chart. |
[Mars in CAPRICORN] You are a very hard worker and are driven to accomplish, manage, and be in control. You like to manipulate a situation for its own benefit and would make a natural supervisor. You have an inner urge for order and organization and a great sense of responsibility. You are competent, ambitious, and cool. |
[Mars in Trine with Moon] You find it easy to work with other people and tend to pour a lot of energy into those around you. Your home and surroundings reflect this. When it comes to teaching or coaching younger people, you are a natural, always able to motivate and inspire others. With your powerful spirit, you enjoy your strong emotions and have an active social life as well. |
[Mars in Trine with Uranus] You put a lot of thought and energy into being different, avoiding the commonplace with great determination. Your drive to innovate, invent, and find new ways to use things is both well coordinated and intense. You could be an excellent teacher and innovator in areas connected to electronics, computers, and communications. You may love to travel and are quite energetic, even athletic. You have a strong urge to be different, to do something different. |
[Mars in Sextile with Neptune] You have an ability to work with the imagination, reaching beyond the mundane to the potential beyond. Your enthusiasm for mystical and religious experience makes you an excellent teacher in artistic and creative matters. Your sense of the unity behind things spiritual and psychological is clear and felt by those around you. You are, no doubt, a romantic, at home in the world of dreams and images. You enjoy working in these areas. |
[Mars in Trine with Pluto] You enjoy working with whatever is psychological -- the hidden, vulnerable, sensitive areas of the mind and self. You can handle material that is sensitive or taboo without batting an eye. This interest in all that is psychological makes you an excellent teacher in the field. You have a natural grasp for the political, for handling the public, and you know how to get your way. Your drive in these areas amounts to a passion, and those around you may feel that you are often too intense. Power struggles are somewhat routine for you. |

Sun/Earth | Beneath all of our Mars energy, our feelings and drive, is our self or very essence. In astrology, this is represented by the Sun/Earth combination -- our home planet. From the Sun comes light -- that which draws all of us living on this Earth into life. The Sun in the astrological chart represents the very heart of us, our deepest core essence. It is what we shall become after we work through all of the changes life offers us. In other words, in astrology the Sun/Earth represents our identity, or true self. |
[Sun in SAGITTARIUS] You are always out-front, frank, and even rough at times -- getting to the heart of any subject. On the move, you are a traveler of both the world and the mind -- philosophy and religion. Outgoing, friendly, and well-liked, you may enjoy sports and physical activity. Not petty, you like grand themes and big gestures. |
[Sun in Square with Moon] There is a lack of harmony between your environment and your ambitions. What you need most is not always at hand to make the kind of progress you envision. Or, when the support is there, you can't get the instruction or direction you require. You may have forgotten where it was you wanted to get to, sort of "all dressed up, but which way to go?" It could be historical, too, as simple as being torn between your mother and your father -- a struggle between that which seeks to nurture you (and perhaps baby you) and your ambitions -- a need to succeed and be all that you can be. |
[Sun in Opposition with Jupiter] You may end up making a living at something not entirely in your best interests. There is a tendency to get carried away when it comes to vocational choices, and you could find yourself pursuing possibilities that lead nowhere. This going against yourself, so to speak, may also bring you in opposition to those in authority. You may have to examine carefully any career choices you make. |
[Sun in Square with Uranus] It may be difficult for you to break with convention and head out on your own. Your ambitions may well prosper, but often at the expense of any real independence and freedom. There is a switch effect: you may alternate between very conventional behavior and sudden rebellious lapses. At these times your nonconformity and refusal to go along works against your own best interests, making it difficult to get ahead. |
[Sun in Square with Pluto] Any attempt to avoid confronting life at the personal level is bound to frustration. Your avowed goals and ambitions may tend to ignore questions of vulnerability and great sensitivity, and the two are forever about to meet and "tell all." You would rather skirt your sensitive and vulnerable areas and concentrate on your career, but they always intrude and refuse to be banished. Although you yourself like to avoid personal issues, your interest in probing the secrets of others is very energetic. |

Inner Planets | So far we have dealt with the major planets (everything outside of us) and with our own planet Earth. We now turn to the two planets inside the Earth's orbit, which represent our inner life. The planets Mercury and Venus have more to do with our internal and personal life than with life outside us. Therefore, we can look to qualities that are inside us. Venus indicates how we appreciate and measure our experience, how we value or love life. Mercury tells us something about how our mind works, how we think and communicate -- our intrinsic brightness. Let's start with Venus, how and what we appreciate. |

Venus | Venus rules our values and sense of appreciation. When we appraise or appreciate something, whether that be another person or a new car, this is Venus -- the sense of love and compassion we may feel. By the same token, this planet rules enjoyment of all kinds too. Whether it be self-appreciation or just plain old decadent self-enjoyment -- having a good time. This is Venus. When we go shopping or are on a spending spree, it is Venus that allows us to appreciate and value all the good things of life. Now let's see how Venus is positioned in your chart. |
[Venus in AQUARIUS] Marriage for convention's sake, if at all, is your motto. Let's not get too personal or emotional. A friend's friend. You love to work for a great cause or purpose, and a better world is the place to be. You appreciate what's fair and democratic, and feel most happy in a group or community. |
[Venus in Sextile with Mercury] You like to work with words and ideas and have a natural appreciation for anything that is literary or artistic. Your sense of discernment when it comes to matters of literary and intellectual taste is very refined. You could write poetry or prose, and you put a very high value on the written word. You enjoy nothing more than a good conversation and may be very adept at speaking and communicating. |

Mercury | And finally, the innermost planet is Mercury, the mind itself. Mercury is the light in our eyes, the ever-changing consciousness within us that moves from idea to idea. Thus Mercury has always represented thoughts, ideas, and the mental process in general. It governs not only ideas, but communications, too. Communications -- by phone, letter, spoken, or however -- are ruled by Mercury. Also thoughts, connections, phone wires, and everything that connects and conveys -- even conversations. By looking at our Mercury, we get an idea as to how our particular mind works. |
[Mercury in SAGITTARIUS] You are fair-minded and above-board, always direct and honest in thought. You are more interested in eternal thoughts and broad landscapes than in minute details. You always manage to get the picture right away. Farsighted, you have a wandering mind that loves to travel and are at home with the bare bones of truth. |
[Mercury in Sextile with Venus] You like to work with words and ideas and have a natural appreciation for anything that is literary or artistic. Your sense of discernment when it comes to matters of literary and intellectual taste is very refined. You could write poetry or prose, and you put a very high value on the written word. You enjoy nothing more than a good conversation and may be very adept at speaking and communicating. |

Outer Planets | In the first section, we have dealt with planets that we can see with our naked eyes. In general, these planets refer to life as we know and live it and are the so-called historical or classic planets. Beyond these are three outer planets that are not visible in the sky and which have cycles longer than the average human life span. Since they are beyond Saturn or time, astrologers call them the trans-personal or transcendental planets -- the planets beyond the physical, the meta-physical planets. One of the ways astrologers learn something about our life beyond time (eternal life) is through these three outer planets: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Here we find information on how we discover ourselves (Uranus), how we understand and accept these discoveries (Neptune), and, in time, how we identify with them (Pluto). Hang on to your metaphysical hats, because these planets deal with areas of our life that are definitely out there. |

Uranus | Our responsibilities can tend to weigh us down, and we each have our particular ways of getting around (or breaking through) the mass of obstructions that tends to congeal around us. The planet that has to do with how we break-through and get beyond the difficulties and problems life presents us is Uranus. This planet represents the way insights come to us, how we discover or come to know and understand ourselves. It has to do with finding new uses for old things, and it rules inventions and sudden insights into our life -- everything that is unusual, eccentric, and out of the ordinary. It is the reverse of the status quo and is always unconventional and heretical. Uranus is, in many ways, the opposite, or undoing of Saturn. It is how we get out. |
[Uranus in VIRGO] You find new ways to serve others and you have brilliant insights into diet, health, ecology, conservation, and the like. New or alternate life styles and ways to make a living interest you. You are economy personified, always able to salvage and redeem anything. You like to tend and care for people and things. You relax by working. |
[Uranus in Square with Sun] It may be difficult for you to break with convention and head out on your own. Your ambitions may well prosper, but often at the expense of any real independence and freedom. There is a switch effect: you may alternate between very conventional behavior and sudden rebellious lapses. At these times your nonconformity and refusal to go along works against your own best interests, making it difficult to get ahead. |
[Uranus in Conjunction with Moon] You are very much involved with all that is traditional, but with this special twist: you are a revolutionary when it comes to the domestic scene and have very special insights into home, family, and surroundings. Others find you original (certainly very different) and perhaps unpredictable, especially when it comes to emotional reactions. Your approach to feelings, moods, and the whole psychological gambit is novel. You tend to show emotions suddenly and/or in unusual ways. You like unconventional friends and are a nonconformist yourself. Independent women may be important to you. |
[Uranus in Trine with Mars] You put a lot of thought and energy into being different, avoiding the commonplace with great determination. Your drive to innovate, invent, and find new ways to use things is both well coordinated and intense. You could be an excellent teacher and innovator in areas connected to electronics, computers, and communications. You may love to travel and are quite energetic, even athletic. You have a strong urge to be different, to do something different. |
[Uranus in Opposition with Saturn] Your innate seriousness and sense of obligation tend to set themselves up against anything that is new and different. Independence on the part of people or events somehow challenges your authority and never fails to invoke an argument or stand-off. Change, even novelty, is seen as threatening and confrontational. Even so, the forces of change assert themselves now and again, managing to over-rule and overturn whatever you have managed to tie down. |
[Uranus in Sextile with Neptune] Your insight and vision into what unites people and into the dreams and mystical regions of our mind is profound. You have an enchanting way of working and communicating with others in these matters and with music and the arts. New paths to world or personal unity are a major interest, and you have a very practical sense of how to make your dreams real. |
[Uranus in Conjunction with Pluto] Secrets have a short half-life around you, for you have them out in a wink of an eye. You are brilliant when it comes to insights into the mind, psychology, and motivation -- yours or others'. Your intensity is obvious, and some may prefer to keep their distance rather than subject themselves to your laser eye. Nothing is passed over without being turned inside and out. Your analytical powers are superb, and you enjoy finding new avenues of inner growth. |

Neptune | Even the most hard-nosed of us have moments of real understanding, when things are seen as linked together and of one piece. We stop getting the idea in little flashes and just finally get the whole thing. It dawns on us. We each have our own way of letting go, having communion, and (as a poet once wrote) letting "the dewdrop slip into the shining sea." These moments and this state of mind are, in fact, the source for all our imagination. There are many ways of seeing through the separateness in the world to the unity behind it. This is the planet Neptune. |
[Neptune in SCORPIO] Unafraid of the "dark" side of life, you are interested in esoteric religion, everything mystical or occult, and so on. Sexuality and physical desires are encouraged and seen as spiritual. Money, power, and things of this world are O.K. too. The physical is ideal. Possessions. |
[Neptune in Sextile with Moon] You have a built-in sense of what the public wants and can always come up with just the right image. You find it easy to work with the emotions and feelings of others, and with great imagination. Your sense of the ideal springs to life whenever other people are involved. A born arranger of atmospheres, you enjoy working with groups of people. You are also very creative when it comes to your home and surroundings. |
[Neptune in Sextile with Mars] You have an ability to work with the imagination, reaching beyond the mundane to the potential beyond. |
[Neptune in Sextile with Uranus] Your insight and vision into what unites people and into the dreams and mystical regions of our mind is profound. You have an enchanting way of working and communicating with others in these matters and with music and the arts. New paths to world or personal unity are a major interest, and you have a very practical sense of how to make your dreams real. |
[Neptune in Sextile with Pluto] You work with real imagination and understanding in areas of the mind that are the most personal or private -- depth psychology. You are like a midwife of the spirit, assisting at the birth of each individual going through a spiritual or re-birth process. You accept the natural process of birth, spiritual and physical, and have dedicated yourself to helping it along. You would make a great teacher in these areas. |

Pluto | Pluto is the planet of profound change, starting deep within us and moving toward the surface. It often touches upon the most sensitive psychological areas inside us. Once touched, we have no choice but to change and grow. The most sensitive of experiences, the times of greatest vulnerability, are times of complete identification with an experience, a person, or a thing. We know in these instants that we are looking at our self, what we in essence are. The most personal of experiences is one of complete identification with a person, moment, or idea. Perhaps this is only possible for most of us when we look into the eyes of our children, and even then only infrequently. Love is not the experience here I am pointing toward here, rather it is one of total identification. This is very sensitive stuff. To touch upon this material is to go through deep inner change and transformation -- inner alchemy. Identification and experiencing that life is somehow our own creation and that, in fact, you are I and I am you. This experience breaks us down and humbles. When we touch upon this experience, we cannot but die to what we have been thinking and doing up to now. It reduces us to our most sensitive because -- in a flash -- we see or remember that it all is us, our life. |
[Pluto in VIRGO] You tend to be radical when it comes to self-analysis, which means health care, food, physical wellbeing, and so on. Serving and caring for yourself and others are primary sources of inner growth and changes. You are sensitive to criticism. |
[Pluto in Square with Sun] Any attempt to avoid confronting life at the personal level is bound to frustration. |
[Pluto in Conjunction with Moon] You always manage to bring the searing truth to group situations. Penetrating psychological analyses are your expertise. You are perceived as so intense that your presence in a group has a very decided effect. Others may feel that nothing is a secret from you. You may have political influence or handle other people's money. |
[Pluto in Trine with Mars] You enjoy working with whatever is psychological -- the hidden, vulnerable, sensitive areas of the mind and self. |

In fact, you are very determined about this. Areas where you are insecure seldom have any opportunity to get aired out and toughen up. Your serious exterior covers over tender feelings. Duties and responsibilities could keep you from opportunities for change and inner growth. |
[Pluto in Conjunction with Uranus] Secrets have a short half-life around you, for you have them out in a wink of an eye. You are brilliant when it comes to insights into the mind, psychology, and motivation -- yours or others'. Your intensity is obvious, and some may prefer to keep their distance rather than subject themselves to your laser eye. Nothing is passed over without being turned inside and out.
